What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is a highly effective skin-resurfacing treatment designed to enhance the appearance and texture of the skin. During this procedure, a specially formulated chemical solution is applied to the skin, promoting exfoliation and eventually causing the outer layers to peel away. The result is a fresher, smoother, and more youthful complexion. Best results are seen with a series of treatments.

How does a chemical peel work?

The process involves the application of a chemical solution containing active ingredients like alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs), trichloroacetic acid (TCA), or phenol. These ingredients work by:

  • Exfoliating Dead Skin Cells: The chemical solution loosens and removes the dead skin cells from the outer layer, revealing new, healthier skin underneath.

  • Stimulating Skin Regeneration: By removing the damaged layers, chemical peels stimulate the production of new skin cells, collagen, and elastin, which are essential for maintaining youthful skin.

What are the benefits of chemical peels?

Chemical peels offer numerous benefits, making them a popular choice for skin rejuvenation:

  • Improvement in Skin Texture and Tone: Peels help smooth rough skin, reduce the appearance of fine lines, and even out skin tone.

  • Reduction of Acne and Acne Scars: Chemical peels can effectively treat active acne and diminish the appearance of acne scars.

  • Reduction of Hyperpigmentation: Peels can lighten dark spots and patches, such as melasma and age spots.

  • Minimization of Pores: Peels help to refine and reduce the size of large pores.

  • Anti-Aging Effects: By promoting collagen production, chemical peels can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

What should I expect during and after a chemical peel?

  • During the Procedure: You might feel a tingling or burning sensation as the chemical solution is applied. A fan will be used to help cool down the skin.

  • After the Procedure: The skin may be red and sensitive. Superficial peels typically have low to minimal downtime. It is crucial to follow post-peel care instructions, including avoiding sun exposure and using sunscreen.

What is the pre and post care? What are the contraindications?

Preparing your skin before a chemical peel is essential to achieve optimal results and minimize potential side effects. Here are the steps you should follow:

  1. Consultation: Schedule a consultation with your skincare professional to discuss your skin type, concerns, and goals. They will determine the most appropriate peel for you.

  2. Avoid Certain Products: Discontinue the use of products containing retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, benzoyl peroxide, and other exfoliants at least one week before your peel. These can increase skin sensitivity and irritation

  3. Sun Protection: Avoid excessive sun exposure and tanning beds for at least two weeks before the procedure. If you need to be outdoors, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

  4. Moisturize: Keep your skin well-hydrated by using a gentle, non-comedogenic moisturizer.

  5. Medication: Inform your provider about any medications you are taking. They might advise you to stop using certain medications that can affect your skin's response to the peel.

  6. Avoid Waxing and Hair Removal: Refrain from waxing, laser hair removal, or using depilatory creams on the treatment area for at least a week before your peel.

Proper aftercare is crucial to ensure the best results and to prevent complications. Here are the guidelines to follow after your chemical peel:

  1. Sun Protection: Your skin will be more sensitive to the sun after a peel. Avoid direct sun exposure and apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher daily. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and protective clothing when outdoors

  2. Moisturize and Hydrate: Use a gentle, hydrating moisturizer to keep your skin moisturized. Avoid products with active ingredients that can irritate your skin.

  3. Avoid Picking or Peeling: Do not pick, pull, or scratch at the peeling skin. Allow it to slough off naturally to avoid scarring and hyperpigmentation.

  4. Gentle Cleansing: Use a mild, non-abrasive cleanser to wash your face. Avoid hot water and use lukewarm water instead.

  5. Avoid Makeup: If possible, avoid wearing makeup for the first few days after the peel to allow your skin to breathe and heal.

  6. No Exfoliants: Refrain from using scrubs, exfoliating brushes, or any products containing acids (AHAs, BHAs, retinoids) until your skin has fully healed, typically for at least one week.

  7. Follow-Up Appointments: Attend any scheduled follow-up appointments with your skincare professional to monitor your skin's progress and address any concerns.

By adhering to these pre-care and post-care instructions, you can enhance the effectiveness of your chemical peel and ensure a smoother recovery process.

CONTRAINDICATIONS: Currently on anticoagulants/blood thinners. Recent chemical peel or exfoliation treatment (within 2-4 weeks). Recent surgery or proccedures. Use of accutane in the past 12 months. Active cold sores, open wounds, or sunburn in the area. Undergoing chemo/radiation treatments. Eczema, rash, active skin infection, or dermatitis in area. History of keloid scarring/formation. Pregnancy and/or breastfeeding. Use of photosensitizing medications.
