What is a neuromodulator? (AKA Botox, Dysport)

Neuromodulators are a class of injectable treatments used to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles and fine lines. The most commonly known neuromodulators are Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin. These products are derived from botulinum toxin type A, a purified protein that temporarily relaxes muscles, preventing them from contracting and forming wrinkles.

How do neuromodulators work? Who is a good candidate for neuromodulators?

Neuromodulators are derived from botulinum toxin type A, a purified protein. When injected into specific facial muscles, they temporarily block nerve signals. This prevents the targeted muscles from contracting, which smooths out the skin and reduces the appearance of wrinkles.

  • Healthy Adults: Individuals in good overall health without any neuromuscular disorders.

  • Visible Dynamic Wrinkles: Ideal candidates are those with moderate to severe dynamic wrinkles.

  • Realistic Expectations: Understanding that while neuromodulators can significantly reduce wrinkles, they do not permanently remove them and will require repeat treatments to maintain results

What are the benefits of neuromodulators? Are they safe?

  • Reduction of Dynamic Wrinkles: Neuromodulators are particularly effective in treating dynamic wrinkles, which are lines that appear when facial expressions are made. Common areas include crow's feet, forehead lines, and frown lines between the eyebrows.

  • Non-Surgical Treatment: Unlike surgical procedures, neuromodulator injections are minimally invasive and require little to no downtime.

  • Quick Results: Results from neuromodulator treatments can typically be seen within a few days and last for several months, making it a convenient option for those seeking quick and noticeable improvements.

  • Preventative Measures: Regular use of neuromodulators can help prevent the formation of new wrinkles, maintaining a youthful appearance over time.

The neuromodulators Botox®/Dysport have been licensed as a safe and effective treatment of various medical conditions in Canada since 1990.

What should I expect during the procedure?

  • Consultation: A thorough consultation with a medical director/nurse injector to discuss your goals, medical history, and any concerns.

  • Injection Process: The actual injection process is quick, often taking less than 15-30 minutes. A fine needle is used to inject small amounts of the neuromodulator into the targeted muscles.

  • Aftercare: Post-treatment, you may experience mild redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites, but these effects typically resolve within a few days.

What is the post care? What are the contraindications?

Immediate Postcare

  1. Avoid Touching the Area: Do not rub or massage the treated areas for at least 24 hours. This helps prevent the neuromodulator from spreading to unintended muscles.

  2. Stay Upright: Remain upright and avoid lying down for at least 4 hours after the treatment. This helps prevent the product from migrating away from the injection sites.

  3. No Strenuous Activities/Heavy Sweating: Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, and hot tubs for 24 hours post-treatment. These activities can increase blood flow and potentially affect the distribution of the neuromodulator.

  4. Avoid Alcohol/Blood Thinners: Refrain for 24 hours after the injection, as it can increase the risk of bruising.

Ongoing Care

  1. Ice Application: Apply a cold pack to the treated areas to reduce swelling and bruising. Do not apply ice directly to the skin; use a cloth or protective barrier.

  2. Gentle Skin Care: Use gentle, non-irritating skincare products for the first few days. Avoid aggressive facial treatments, such as peels or exfoliation, for at least a week.

  3. Follow-Up Appointments: Attend any scheduled follow-up appointments with your practitioner to assess the results and determine if any touch-ups are needed.

  4. Monitor for Side Effects: Common side effects include minor redness, swelling, and bruising at the injection sites, which typically resolve within a few days. If you experience severe side effects, such as difficulty swallowing, breathing problems, or significant muscle weakness, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Contraindications

  1. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Neuromodulator injections are not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women due to a lack of studies confirming safety during these periods.

  2. Neuromuscular Disorders: Individuals with neuromuscular disorders such as myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, or ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) should avoid neuromodulators as they can exacerbate muscle weakness.

  3. Allergies to Ingredients: If you have a known allergy to any components of the neuromodulator, such as botulinum toxin, human albumin, or lactose, you should not receive these injections.

  4. Infection at Injection Site: If you have an active infection or inflammation at the intended injection site, the procedure should be postponed until the area has healed.

  5. Recent Surgery: Avoid neuromodulator injections if you have recently undergone facial surgery or have planned surgery in the near future, as this can affect healing and results.

  6. Certain Medications: Inform your practitioner if you are taking medications that affect muscle activity, such as certain antibiotics (aminoglycosides) or anticholinergic drugs, as these can interact with neuromodulators.
